Marta sat between Wendy and Stewart, clasping their hands tightly. She couldn’t for the life of her remember what the man had said his name was, but she knew it didn’t matter. Whatever it was, her future was being held in his hands at the moment.

Ellie reached across her father and squeezed Marta’s hand. No words were needed; this was Marta’s family and they were there for her on this special day.

The man removed his glasses, closed the file that was open in front of him and smiled at the small family.

‘Marta Gregson, I am delighted to tell you that I have approved the application for adoption, and you are now Marta Needham. I wish all of you the very best for the future, and I’ll leave you to the celebrations that I’m sure are now planned for this wonderful day.’

He stood and left the room, but the Needham family didn’t see him go through the door. They were all on their feet, hugging each other, crying.
